Lenexa’s Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center
Project Overview
After serving the Lenexa community for over 50 years, the Indian Trails Aquatic Center, now Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center, required a major renovation based on the 2019 Aquatics Study. The study indicated that the center had reached the end of its service life and needed significant repairs.
GBA, as part of the design team, which included SFS Architecture, Confluence, and WTI, played a key role in renovating the Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center within Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park in Lenexa, Kansas.
GBA provided Civil Engineering and Land Surveying services, including design development plans, construction documents and limited construction period services. Collaborating with Confluence and the City of Lenexa, GBA expertise ensured the completion of the project. The renovated facility now offers enhanced amenities and improved functionality, providing a better recreational experience for the community.
Challenges and Solutions
The primary challenge was the complexity of the pool’s aging infrastructure. The old pool had reached the end of its useful life, necessitating a comprehensive overhaul. The GBA team tackled this by leveraging advanced drone-mounted LiDAR technology, alongside traditional surveying methods, to accurately map the site. This innovative approach allowed for precise civil engineering, ensuring seamless integration of new features while preserving much of the existing landscape elements.
Key Contributions by GBA
- Site Survey and Basemap Creation: The initial site survey laid the foundation for all subsequent design and engineering efforts. Utilizing traditional and advanced drone-mounted LiDAR technology, GBA ensured comprehensive and accurate mapping of the area.
- Civil Design: The team meticulously planned and designed parking areas, storm sewers, best management practices (BMPs), erosion control measures, site lighting and utilities. Integrating these elements was crucial to the new aquatic center’s functionality and aesthetics.
- Environmental Permitting and SWPPP Preparation: GBA navigated the complexities of environmental permitting for land disturbance, ensuring compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) requirements. The Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) was meticulously prepared to safeguard the environment during construction.
- Construction Period Services: Throughout the construction phase, GBA provided continuous support to ensure that the project stayed on track and within budget.
Community Impact
The new facility boasts a variety of modern amenities, including an enhanced lazy river, inner tube and speed slide, improved zero-entry pool and an array of water features that cater to all ages. The site also includes 150 newly added parking stalls and a dedicated drop-off and pick-up area close to the entrance of the aquatic center. This transformation rejuvenates the community space and enhances the overall quality of life for residents.
Client Collaboration and Success
The success of this project can be attributed to the strong, long-term relationships GBA has fostered with the client design team. This collaboration ensured a shared vision and smooth execution, culminating in a project that was completed on time and within budget.
Construction Timeline
The Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center exemplifies what can be achieved through innovation, collaboration and a commitment to excellence. GBA is proud to have played a pivotal role in this transformative project, which will leave a lasting legacy for the Lenexa community.
Construction for the Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center was completed in May 2024, just in time for the summer season.
