Transforming Lenexa City Center

Project Overview

Since the early 2000s, GBA, the City of Lenexa and development partners have played a key role in transforming the Lenexa City Center into a thriving, well-planned community. GBA designed essential infrastructure for City Center East—including streets, sanitary sewers, storm drainage and utility systems—along with the site plan for the first building, now home to Grand Street Café.

In 2007, GBA designed the North Village infrastructure, supporting the City Center apartments and the Tom French residential area. The team completed plans for Central Green Park, a 20-acre open space emphasizing stormwater management, which was completed in 2010. Key features include water recirculation, walking trails, street enhancements and sustainable amenities like wind and solar power.

GBA played a significant role in the West End apartments at City Center North, providing civil/site engineering, landscape architecture and surveying services for a 9.85-acre site with 13 buildings, 309 apartments and 265 parking spaces. The design incorporated stormwater treatment, ADA compliance and sanitary sewer systems.

In 2014, GBA partnered with Copaken Brooks and the City to design the first phase of the North Village at City Center Lenexa, including 89th Street and Penrose Lane. The team developed the E2 site, now home to Saint’s Pub and contributed to the design of Lenexa City Hall and Civic Center. Other projects include the E1 retail building, Scarborough Street and enhancements to the City Center walking trail and pond.

GBA’s comprehensive approach and focus on sustainable infrastructure have been pivotal in shaping Lenexa City Center into a well-planned and thriving community. Lenexa City Center is the pinnacle of the City of Lenexa’s vision and planning, which have spanned decades from inception to fruition.
