KDOT's Gateway Project
Project Overview
GBA was a major participant in the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) first-ever major design-build project. The Gateway project included mainline pavement reconstruction, interchange upgrades, and 26 bridge structure improvements to help improve this critical intersection of I-435, I-35, and K-10.
The GBA Transportation Engineering team was tasked with overseeing 15 structures, conducting design activities over a span of just over a year, and completing them within about three months of receiving the notice-to-proceed.
GBA’s design teams were responsible for:
- Two early steel packages
- An early bridge widening package
- Two widened and rehab bridge packages
- Two new bridge design packages and preliminary design for two new bridges.
GBA quickly provided these plans and followed the required quality process for this project. Along the way, GBA eliminated bridge girders and found hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings on the bridges and retaining walls.
GBA provided signing for all segments of this project. Signing typically extended beyond the segment limits and would often need to be coordinated with the local municipality. The project relocated an existing sign truss from one segment and reused it in another segment as a cost-saving approach. Additionally, we developed maintenance of traffic and traffic control plans for multiple segments. The maintenance of traffic design included the innovative use of contraflow lanes to carry traffic in the opposing direction of travel.
