US-40 / K-10 Diverging Diamond Interchange
Project Overview
As the Lawrence, Kansas population continues to grow, the transportation infrastructure must reflect that growth to meet increasing demands. The US-40/K-10 interchange, a critical hub for traffic flow in and around the city, required significant upgrades to ensure efficiency and safety. GBA took on the challenge, leading the design for Lawrence’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). This forward-thinking solution replaced the traditional diamond interchange with a modern design that enhanced traffic management and prepared the region for future development.
Innovative Design and Key Solutions
The project introduced technical solutions to address complex transportation challenges. GBA relocated East 900 Road to align with KDOT’s access management and intersection spacing requirements. Additionally, GBA upgraded US-40 to a divided arterial extending half a mile west of the interchange. For pedestrians and cyclists, the project extended an existing reinforced concrete box (RCB) under US-40/6th Street, providing a safe passage for the Lawrence Loop trail and connecting it to the city’s sidewalk network.
Bridge Rehabilitation and DDI Conversion
GBA took a practical and efficient approach by rehabilitating the existing bridge structure rather than opting for a full reconstruction. The ramp terminals were converted to a DDI configuration, which redirected traffic flow in a way that reduced congestion and increased safety. This cost-effective design decision ensured that the interchange could integrate with the future improvements of the South Lawrence Trafficway.
Timeline and Completion
Initial studies for the interchange began in 2012, but the project paused until funding was secured in late 2020. GBA resumed design work and delivered the final plans in 2023. Construction was completed smoothly, and the new interchange opened to traffic in fall 2024. Throughout the process, GBA maintained a focus on technical precision, ensuring that the design and construction met the highest standards for safety and efficiency.
Community and Regional Impact
The new US-40/K-10 DDI improves traffic flow and safety at a busy intersection in Lawrence. By enhancing access to the area, the project supports future development west of K-10 and is crucial in accommodating the city’s growth. The design also integrates with ongoing infrastructure projects, ensuring minimal disruption during construction and offering long-term benefits for the region.
