Promega Opens New Facility
Manufacturing usually conjures up images of a big metal building filled with steel machinery and dirty concrete floors. This is not the case when it comes to biotech manufacturing and especially not the case with the new $120 million Promega manufacturing building. Like other biotech manufacturing facilities it’s filled with clean rooms full of stainless steel equipment, but unlike other biotech manufacturing facilities, it has a retreat-like feel.
On October 11, Promega hosted a grand opening for the new facility open to the public allowing the guests to learn about the science behind molecular tools and technologies. The 260,000-square-foot complex includes production lines and manufacturing areas, but also a customer experience center for employees and guests which includes spaces for training, laboratory demonstrations, and conferences. The facility also has an exercise and fitness center and dining area.
The state of the art building has floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the prairie as well as a living wall containing 7,000 native and tropical plants, designed to be in bloom year round. The facility has several sustainable features including a geothermal heating system. The hot water will be provided throughout the building by using a solar system. Dark-sky-compliant lighting system and fixtures was designed to provide maximum illumination where needed. Four electric-car charging stations is another feature provided to employees.
GBA provided project management and process engineering services including process utility design, process equipment procurement, automation and commissioning.
